Croatia's Zach Vukusic has stormed into the history books by becoming the youngest ever captain in international cricket. He was just 17 years and 311 days old when he led Croatia in a four-match T20I series against Cyprus in Zagreb.
Zach Vukusic scripts World Record, becomes youngest-ever captain
He also became the first 17-year-old to captain a team at the top level of cricket. Apparently, the teen sensation shattered France's Noman Amjad's record which was scripted in 2022. The Frenchman was just 18 years and 24 days old when he led France against Czech Republic.
Five youngest captains in international cricket history:
Zach Vukusic (17y 311d, 2025, Croatia vs Cyprus)
Noman Amjad (18y 24d, 2022, France vs Czech Republic)
Carl Hartmann (18y 276d, 2023, Isle of Man vs Spain)
Luwsanzundui Erdenebulgan (18y 324d, 2023, Mongolia vs Nepal)
Didier Ndikubwimana (19y 327d, 2023, Rwanda vs Tanzania)
All things were not happy for the Young captain as Vukusic’s team lost the first two matches of his captaincy era against Cyprus, and also that too with a big margin. In the first match, Cyprus posted a huge total for Croatia to chase, as they scored 213/3 in 20 overs at the Mladost Cricket Ground in Croatia's capital. But in reply, Vukusic’s team were only able to get to 155, with the visitors securing a 58-run win.
In the second contest, Croatia batted first and were bowled out for just 132. The below par target gave no problem to Cyprus as they chased the total in 15.5 overs for a seven-wicket win. On an individual level though, Vukusic performed well with both the bat and the ball. In the series opener, he leaked runs in his four-over spell, conceding 41 runs and managed to take just one wicket. With the bat though, he top-scored for his team with a 32-ball 43.
In the first match of his captaincy stint as international captain, Vukusic scored 43 runs off 32 balls with five fours and two sixes. Batting at No.4, Vukusic was the top-scorer for his team.
