R Ashwin reportedly wants to part ways from CSK ahead of IPL 2026 auction

Reportedly Ashwin has informed CSK about his decision

In a surprising turn of events, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reportedly decided to part ways with the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 38-year-old, who was acquired by the five-time champions in the mega auction for INR 9.75 crore, had a difficult 2025 season.

CSK to release R Ashwin ahead of IPL 2026 auction?

He managed to take just seven wickets in nine matches, a performance that led to him being benched for several games. Ashwin's underwhelming returns, particularly in the powerplay where he was often used, were a key factor in his struggles throughout the tournament.

Cricbuzz reports that Ashwin has already informed the franchise of his decision to leave, though the specific reasons for his departure remain unknown. In addition to leaving the team, the veteran spinner is also expected to step down from his role as the Director of Operations at the CSK Academy. He has held this position for the past year, but a potential conflict of interest could arise if he joins another franchise. To avoid this, Ashwin has decided to give up his off-field role with the team as well. It's currently unclear whether Ashwin will be traded to another team or if he will enter the mini-auction to be held later this year.

Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently concluded his international career, retiring from all formats after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy's final Test against Australia at the Gabba. He finished as the second-highest wicket-taker for India across all three formats.

Meanwhile, there's been a lot of activity behind the scenes at the CSK camp. Top officials, including skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and the legendary MS Dhoni, have been in Chennai for several days, holding meetings to strategize for the upcoming IPL season.

Ashwin's decision to leave CSK comes just one season after his much-anticipated return. He had spent his first six IPL seasons with the team before playing for several different franchises between 2016 and 2024, including the Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. This news also follows a recent report that Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has requested to be released by his team ahead of the 2026 season.
