The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still deliberating on its 2024 plan for the Indian Premier League (IPL). The teams and the franchise owners have already indicated which players they would like to keep on their teams. Some teams are unwilling to keep even one player, while others have asked for the retention figure to be increased to eight. Although 5 or 6 will probably be the eventual retention number, the BCCI has not yet released a formal statement on the subject. On the other hand, the Indian board is also working hard to classify retiring players as "uncapped."
According to reports, the Super Kings were the ones who pushed the BCCI to reinstate the previous regulation that allowed retired players to be included in the uncapped player group. CSK submitted the proposal in the hopes of being able to retain MS Dhoni at a lower cost should the regulation reappear. However, the subject also presents other difficulties.
As per a report in Cricbuzz, the release of the retention guidelines is scheduled by the BCCI at the end of September. August was the deadline earlier. According to reports, the board is giving CSK's proposal careful thought because Dhoni's one-year contract extension benefits both the team and the IPL as a whole.
Although, the report also states that CSK's number one priority is keeping Dhoni. The legendary player would be kept even if the BCCI permitted only two retentions per franchise.
Regarding the cost of keeping uncapped players, the BCCI is considering taking balances away from franchises' budgets according on how many players they keep, rather than what kinds of players they keep. The teams would then have the freedom to choose how much to give the players that were retained.
Therefore, the BCCI would be the only one to decide how much money to pay Dhoni if he were to remain capped or uncapped.
