New Zealand won't take the field with a near full-strength squad for the ODI series against India starting on November 4. Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman have been ruled out of the series as they are yet to recover from their respective injuries.
Ravindra had a freak shoulder dislocation during a promotional shoot. The team management does not want to take any risks with his fitness ahead of the two-Test series. He needs more time to recover before he takes the field at full capacity.
Chapman had an MRI recently and will require two more weeks to recover from his left hamstring injury. Chapman has not played competitive cricket since he got injured while playing in the inaugural edition of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) for Belfast Wolves.
“Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it’s a shame they have to miss this series,” said New Zealand head coach Rob Walter.
“I caught up with Mark last week and although he’s disappointed he’s working hard to get back on the field.
“With Rachin, his shoulder hasn’t quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket, so with the Test series later this month we don’t want to take any undue risks."
In addition, there are doubts over Matt Henry’s availability for the first three ODIs. Henry had complained of a tight calf during the second T20I of the series and left the field without completing his quota of four overs. Henry was ruled out of the third T20I. He was expected to recover before the ODI series, but Matthew Fisher has been added as his cover.
Fisher was part of the last two ODIs. He will continue to stay with the side after playing two T20Is. Meanwhile, Henry has already joined the squad, but whether he will play remains to be seen. The team management would not want to risk aggravating the injury before the Test series.

Replacements for Ravindra and Chapman
New Zealand have added Tim Seifert to the side. Seifert was already part of the squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs. He will remain with the squad.
Henry Nicholls has been recalled to the ODI squad. Nicholls will be available for the first three ODIs before his preparation for the Test series begins. Last week, Nicholls had scored a century for Canterbury against Wellington in their 209-run win in a Ford Trophy 2026-27 clash.
After Nicholls joins the Test squad, Dean Foxcroft will replace him in the side for the fourth and fifth ODIs. Foxcroft has played six ODIs so far and has scored 171 runs, including two half-centuries. He is currently part of the four-day series between New Zealand A and India A. He will join the squad after November 10, ahead of the fourth ODI in Mount Maunganui.
“We’re pleased to bring in Henry who is no stranger to this side, and Dean who recently featured in the ODIs against the West Indies," Walter added.

One change in India ODI squad
There is one major change in India’s squad for the first three ODIs. Prasidh Krishna, who is yet to attain full fitness after a hamstring injury, has been ruled out of the ODI series. Auqib Nabi, who recently made his ODI debut against West Indies at home, has been named his replacement.
There is a question mark on Mohammed Siraj’s availability for the ODI series opener on November 4. Siraj is currently playing in the second four-day game of the series against New Zealand A in Wellington. The four-day game ends on November 3.
All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will only be available for the first ODI of the series. Then, he will get much-needed red-ball practice in the third and final four-day game of the series. Reddy has not played a single first-class game this year like India’s pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.
Earlier, it was reported that Bumrah will also be part of the three-day game in Lincoln. But an official call is yet to be made. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the Lincoln red-ball game too. Pant was initially named in the squad with his participation subject to fitness. It is a precautionary measure for now. He has started skill training and experienced no discomfort. A timeline for his return is yet to be ascertained. It is not clear whether he will be fit for the Test series opener, which begins on November 19.
