England’s County Championship Division One team Hampshire on September 2 announced that they have dropped New Zealand's rape-acquitted pacer Scott Kuggeleijn fom their squad. The decision comes after his signing led to widespread backlash from the County's supporters and staff.
Kuggeleijn was accused of rape and assault in 2015. After two years, in an initial trial, he was found not guilty. The verdict was delivered by a hung jury. He was later acquitted in the second trial.
The 34-year-old Kiwi pacer had signed to play Hampshire’s four remaining matches in the season.
"Having reflected and listened to feedback from our staff and supporters, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the club," Hampshire said in a statement. "We value the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who took the time to share their views.
"Our focus now turns to supporting the team through the final four County Championship fixtures of the season. We encourage everyone to unite behind the team as we enter a crucial stage of the campaign."
However, it is not clear whether Kuggeleijn is still under contract with Hampshire. The club had confirmed the signing of the BlackCaps pacer on September 1 but did not announce it on social media or put out a press release. After immense backlash, they were forced to take a U-turn within 24 hours.

Hampshire to get relegated?
Currently, Hampshire are at the bottom of the table with just 86 points. They have lost five out of 10 games, won two whereas three ended in a draw. Until and unless they stage a turnaround in the remaining matches, the sword of relegations dangles over their head.
Leicestershire are ahead of them with 102 points. In the County Championship Division Two, Durham are poised to get get promoted to Division One. Kent and Northamptonshire are tied for the second spot.
Kuggeleijn's cricket career continues
Kuggeleijn continued to play cricket after the court's verdict. He continues to play professional cricket. He has represented New Zealand in three Tests, two ODIs and 18 T20Is. In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019, he was roped in by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and played two games for them. He recently featured in the Top End T20 series for Hyderabad Kingsmen on Australian soil.
