India's legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar opened up on the rumoured rift between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after they announced their retirement from T20Is.  Both Virat and Rohit played their last T20I match against South Africa in the final of the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024 which was hosted by the USA and West Indies. 

 

The rumours of a rift between Kohli and Rohit started after India's exit from the 2019 ICC World Cup. At the same time, former India fielding coach R Sridhar also revealed that the team was divided into two camps after the team's exit from the ICC World Cup 2019 in the semi-final.

In the exclusive conversation with SPORTS TAK, Gavaskar said that all these were rumours and there is no personal difference between Rohit and Kohli. 

 

“Yes, the things that happen between the players, I have seen that they are rumours. If you want to be a rumour, it can be a good story for the media. It is good for the media. There is no team where there is a difference of opinion, there are tactics, and personal differences can never happen. There can be a difference in tactics. And There can be a difference of opinion. There can never be a personal difference. And these tactical differences are made into a big hole for those who have an agenda” said Gavaskar.

Virat Kohli for Rohit Sharma

Both Virat and Rohit was seen hugging each other after India won the T20 World Cup and Kohli even hailed Rohit during the felicitation ceremony at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. 

 

"I don't know about breaking the internet but this is the first time in 15 years of playing together that I've seen Rohit show so much emotions on the field. When I was walking up the steps, I was crying, he was crying, and we hugged. For me, that's going to be a very special memory from that day, because all said and done, after so many years, our only goal has been this. The only goal has been Indian cricket and the Indian flag. And that's what we take pride in," Kohli said.
