First-class cricket's first-ever concussion substitute, Sussex and former Lancashire all-rounder, Danny Lamb's career came to an abrupt end due to a spinal cord injury. The 30-year-old has been forced to retire due to his medical conditions. He had an "urgent neck discectomy and fusion surgery" in July but it could not help him get back on track. As a result, he made to make the difficult decision to cut-short his cricket career.
Lamb, who made his debut for Lancashire, had joined Sussex on a three-year contract. This was the last year of his contract. Danny has been part of two County Championship Division Two-winning teams. He has also played in two T20 Blast Finals Days.
"It is incredibly difficult to have my career end through injury but, after taking medical advice, I know it is the right decision for my long-term health," Lamb said in a statement.

"I was never the most naturally gifted player, but I always tried to give everything for the team and do whatever was required to help us win. I have been fortunate to experience some incredible moments that will stay with me forever."
Lamb made his debut in 2018. In his debut season, he became the first concussion substitute in England's first-class cricket. He replaced a concussed Australian pacer Joe Mennie in Lancashire's clash against Worcestershire.
Lamb is the older brother of England women's international cricketer Emma Lamb who has played two Tests, 29 ODIs and one T20I so far. She is currently representing Birmingham Phoenix in the Women’s Hundred Competition 2026.
Danny Lamb’s career in numbers
His last appearance on the field was in June 2026 where he represented Sussex's 2nd XI side. From 38 first-class games, he has 68 wickets, averaging just over 33, including four four-fers. He has 1,232 runs from 54 innings, including two tons and five fifties. He averages 28.65 with the bat in red-ball cricket.
He has played 34 List A games, taking 45 wickets, averaging just over 35. He has a fifer to his name in the format. He has scored 592 runs at an average of 32.88 and an impressive strike rate of 116.53. He has four fifties to his name.
He has played T20 Blast for a decade. Apart from Lancashire and Sussex, he has represented Gloucestershire as well. From 83 games, he has 61 wickets, including a fifer. In the batting department, he scored 578 runs at a strike rate of 114.68. He missed his maiden T20 century by just one run.
