Smith's illustrious Test career spanned over a decade, beginning with his debut against New Zealand in 1958 and concluding with his final match against Australia in 1972. A prolific run-scorer, he amassed nearly 40,000 first-class runs over his career, which included 72 centuries—three of which were scored at the Test level.

Following his playing days, Smith continued to make a profound impact on the sport, serving as the chairman of Warwickshire between 1991 and 2003. This era proved to be highly successful for the club, yielding multiple trophies with his son, Neil Smith, playing an integral role on the team. In honor of his immense contributions, a moment of silence was observed on Monday before the start of play on day four of Warwickshire's County Championship match against Glamorgan.

“Warwickshire County Cricket Club are saddened to learn of the passing of Bears’ legend MJK Smith at the age of 92. Once a Bear, always a Bear,” Warwickshire said in a statement.
