In a surprising turn of events, former England skipper and legendary all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been named the head coach of Sydney Thunders on Tuesday, June 2. Flintoff, who previously represented Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, has agreed to pen a two-year deal with the Sydney-based side.
Notably, this is going to be the first coaching assignment for Flintoff outside the United Kingdom. At Sydney Thunder, Flintoff will replace Trevor Bayliss, who was relived of his duties after five years in charge. Sydney Thunder secured only two victories in th2 2025-26 BBL season under Bayliss's coaching and finished at the bottom of the standings for second time in last three seasons.
New chapter for Andrew Flintoff
Flintoff was given priority ahead of former Australia players like Shane Watson and Dan Christian.
In an interview, Flintoff opened up on his appointment and the challenge that comes ahead with the role while expressing faith in his potential to make a valuable contribution to team's success.

“When the opportunity to coach Sydney Thunder arose, obviously I was excited," said Flintoff.
"You grow up seeing Sydney on TV, not thinking I’d ever get the opportunity to go there, never mind the opportunity to head coach Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash.
While continuing, Flintoff revealed his main aim as a head coach of Thunder. He said that he wants every players to feel supported and happy during the upcoming season.
“One of my aims during my time with Sydney Thunder is that every player looks back and thinks, ‘That’s the best part of the year; that’s a team that I want to play for," said Flintoff.
“I’m excited to come over, get involved, and coach this team. I’m here to do the best job I possibly can for the team and everybody who comes out and supports us," concluded Flintoff.
It will be interesting to see how Flintoff's coaching stint goes at the Sydney Thunder as it is going to be a challenging job for the former England all-rounder. Earlier, he served as head coach of Norther Superchargers in the men's Hundred competition. Currently, he is in charge of England Lions and coached them during two tours of Australian since taking up the role in October 2024.
