After the official announcement of Gautam Gambhir's appointment as the new Indian head coach, India's coaching staff has become a new topic of discussion. There is no clear picture of who will be joining the Indian team with the ex-KKR mentor but reports have been suggesting that the former Indian opener has suggested a lot of his friends from Kolkata Knight Riders days. The latest edition to this list is the former Pakistan bowling coach.

 

Gambhir wants Morne Morkel to join his coaching staff

 

Sports Tak understands that Gautam Gambhir has given a wishlist to BCCI on who he wants in his support staff. Former South African pacer Morne Morkel is also on the list. Morkel has played under Gambhir during his KKR days, he was even part of the LSG camp back when Gambhir was the franchise's mentor. The legendary pacer also holds the experience of coaching an International side. He was the bowling coach of Pakistan till November 2023. However, a final call will only be taken by BCCI after they release job openings.

Other candidates for bowling coach position


Earlier, Sports Tak has also learned that Gambhir also suggested the name of former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Vinay Kumar for the bowling coach position. However, BCCI has also been discussing the names of ODI World Cup 2011 winning member Zaheer Khan and former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji.

 

The upcoming tour of Sri Lanka which will include three T20Is and as many as ODIs will be the first assignment for Gautam Gambhir as the new Indian head coach. He took over the office as the successor of Rahul Dravid who ended his tenure after the historic triumph in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. The southpaw would like to continue to guide India and perform with a similar dominance.
