Cricketer turned politician and Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Member of Parliament Harbhajan Singh won everyone's hearts on Saturday morning when he took to Twitter to announce that he would contribute his Rajya Sabha salary to the daughters of farmers for their education & welfare.
The spin wizard said that he has joined Rajya Sabha to the betterment of the nation and vowed to do everything he can for the same cause.
“As a Rajya Sabha member, I want to contribute my RS salary to the daughters of farmers for their education & welfare. I've joined to contribute to the betterment of our nation and will do everything I can. Jai Hind”," Harbhajan tweeted.
The 41-year-old was elected unopposed as the Rajya Sabha member from Punjab. He had said that he will promote sports as he has been entrusted a responsibility that he will fulfill sincerely. Harbhajan has always been associated with various philanthropic activities throughout his playing days.
Harbhajan retired from all forms of cricket in December last year.
Harbhajan has always been vocal about his aspirations for the betterment of country specially in sports. Few days back, he vowed to promote sports in the country and increase India’s Olympics medal tally to 200.
Speaking to reporters after filing his papers for the Rajya Sabha from Punjab as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee, the former India spinner had said, “My focus will be on the development of sports and connecting the youth of Punjab with sports. A country like India should win 200 medals in the Olympics, I will do everything to promote sports in the country.”
He represented India in 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is – picking up 417, 269 and 25 wickets respectively. In an international career that lasted from 1998 to 2016, the off-spinner had some memorable moments and was a part of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup-winning squad. The 41-year old was also a handy contributor with the bat, scoring 3569 runs with two centuries and nine fifties.
