Shreyas Iyer has officially heralded as India's new captain in the shortest format. In a decisive move, the national selectors dropped Suryakumar Yadav from the squad entirely, hitting the reset button on their T20I leadership strategy. The radical transition has been executed with an eye on critical upcoming milestones, including this year's highly anticipated Asian Games, alongside the long-term horizons of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the subsequent T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma's big words for India's T20I captain Shreyas Iyer
Rohit, who is the brand ambassador of the T20 Mumbai League, reacted to the development and emphasised that Iyer’s stellar track record in the IPL will serve as the ultimate breeding ground for his international captaincy. Having famously masterminded Kolkata Knight Riders' title-winning campaign in 2024 and subsequently guiding the Punjab Kings to a phenomenal final appearance in 2025, Iyer has consistently proven his ability to manage big personalities and high-stakes pressure. According to Rohit, these elite franchise achievements have given the 31-year-old the exact blueprint and foundational experience needed to successfully steer the national team into this prosperous new era.
"I'm sure looking at how he has captained in the last few years for his franchise, he's going to have a good time," Rohit said.
Rohit also shed light on the demanding nature of the sport by stating that absolutely nothing comes easy for a cricketer coming through the Mumbai ranks. He said that the relentless competition and high expectations of the city's cricketing culture forge a unique resilience in players who manage to break through to the highest level.
Reflecting on the monumental responsibility now resting on Shreyas Iyer's shoulders, Rohit noted that the new skipper is well-aware of the challenges ahead. He remarked that Shreyas would fully understand that captaincy is not merely a designation handed to someone, but rather a prestigious title that one has to continuously earn through performance, respect, and astute leadership on the field.
"Look, playing in Mumbai, representing Mumbai teaches you a lot of things. If you ask anyone who has captained India or Mumbai before us, they'll tell you the same thing. Nothing comes easy here. I'm pretty sure it's the same elsewhere as well. But here I'm just talking about Mumbai - nothing comes easy. You have to really earn it so captaincy is also something that you have to earn and earn the respect of people around you and that is something that all these guys have it," he added.

Suryakumar Yadav never gave up: Rohit Sharma
The T20 World Cup 2024-winning captain also took the opportunity to lavish praise on Suryakumar Yadav’s memorable stint at the helm of the national side. He highlighted how Suryakumar's leadership journey reached its absolute pinnacle earlier this year, culminating in a historic campaign where he successfully guided India to a record-extending third T20 World Cup championship.
Despite the recent management shake-up, Rohit emphasized that Suryakumar's contributions as captain would remain an unforgettable chapter in Indian cricket history. He commended the veteran batter for his ability to maintain team unity and drive the squad to ultimate glory on the world stage, leaving behind a lasting legacy of success.
"I'm pretty sure nothing has come easy, especially for Surya. He made his India debut at 30 or 31, if I'm not wrong, which means that he never gave up. He always wanted to be in the fight and when it came, he wanted to grab it with both hands, and he did it," Rohit concluded.
