After a wait of more than 100 years, Cricket is all set to make its comeback in the Olympic Games, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed the qualification route for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. The biggest sporting event will consist of six men's and six women's teams, with each nation allowed a 15-member squad in the T20 format.
As per the qualification pathway, only six nations will make the final cut for each of the men's and women's competition in Pomana. Meanwhile, five spots are decided on the basis of rankings and placings in major tournaments, the last nation each men's and women's competition will be decided through the first-ever ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.
How does the Men's roadmap work?
In the men's category, the route depends on the official ICC T20I rankings, making every single bilateral series and tournament over the coming six months extremely important.

To claim a automatic qualification, the USA must fall under the top 15 of the ICC Men's T20I rankings at least once between June 30 and December 31, 2026.
Notably, The ICC's criteria is based on achieving the ranking milestone rather than maintaining it until the end of the official qualification period. As of now, the USA are currently placed 13th in the ICC Men's T20I rankings, they could secure a direct qualification as soon as the window gets open.
What is continental dominance?
To ensure a proper representation, ICC and IOC have introduced major guidelines. As per those guidelines, the highest-ranked eligible team from Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania in the ICC Men's T20I rankings on December 31, 2026 will secure a direct Olympic berth.
As per the current ranking scenarios, India (No.1) is the leading contender from Asia, while England (No.2) occupies the top European place. Australia (No.3 ) is the best ranked team from Oceania, and South Africa (No.5) currently leads the African qualification race.
What about the final sixth spot?
The final spot for the LA Olympics 2028 will be determined through the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027, an eight-team tournament with a winner-takes-all format. The competition will consist of the seven highest-ranked teams that fail to claim a direct qualification through the continental route, with only the champion earning the last available Olympic spot.
Currently, New Zealand (No.4) and Pakistan (No.6) could be forced into the qualifier if they finish behind the top-ranked side from the respective continents at the end of 2026.
