India wicketkeeper-batter has slammed the selection committee for ignoring Baba Indrajith from South Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. Indrajith has had a good record in domestic circuit of late but he was among the notable omissions from South Zone squad alongside Vijay Shankar.

Miffed at the selection, Karthik took to Twitter and wrote: “I DONT understand selection committee these days. BABA INDRAJITH plays for Rest of India against MP in the first week of March 2023. There has been no first class matches post that, but he doesn't feature for SOUTH ZONE in the duleep trophy. Can someone tell me why??”

Indrajith’s numbers

Indrajith was a part of Rest of India squad against Madhya Pradesh in the Irani Cup where he registered scores of 19 and 0. However, Indrajith was the fourth-highest run-scorer for Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy 2023. He scored 505 runs from 11 innings at an average of 50.50 including one century and three half-centuries.

Big names in South Zone squad

Back after injury, Hanuma Vihari has been named as the captain of South Zone squad with Mayank Agarwal as vice captain. Srikar Bharat who recently returned from World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final in England has been included as wicketkeeper. Another wicketkeeper in the side is his Andhra Pradesh teammate Ricky Bhui.

Tilak Varma and Sai Sudharsan are among the batters who had a fruitful Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season with their respective franchises. The two left-handed batters will be available for selection as well.

Duleep Trophy 2023 will be played from June 28 to July 16. This indicates that Bharat may be available for the initial part of the tournament only as he is highly likely to fly to West Indies for the two-Test series starting July 12 which will be a part of new World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.

South Zone full squad: Hanuma Vihari (c), Mayank Agarwal (vc), KS Bharat (wk), Ricky Bhui (wk), Sai Sudharshan, Washington Sundar, R Samarth, Tilak Varma, Sachin Baby, R Sai Kishore, V Kaverappa, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Pradosh Ranjan Paul, KV Sasikanth, Darshan Misal
