ICC Annual Meeting: Proposals for shorter ODIs and WTC expansion shot down

Story Highlights:

ICC took some crucial decision in it's annual meeting

Reportedly the proposal for 40-over ODIs and WTC team expansion has been rejected

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently concluded its pivotal annual meeting in Edinburgh, which ran from July 8 to July 11. With the cricketing world eagerly awaiting the outcomes, details have finally emerged regarding the sport's future trajectory. Most notably, the governing body put an end to rampant speculation about a major structural overhaul, choosing not to approve any reduction of the One-Day International (ODI) format from 50 to 40 overs. Instead, the discussions centered heavily on long-term strategy and a broader restructuring of the sport ahead of its next commercial cycle.

Key takeaways from ICC Annual meeting

In another significant decision, the ICC opted against expanding the World Test Championship (WTC). Despite growing calls from the cricket community to increase the tournament's pool from nine teams to twelve, which would have granted vital Test opportunities to emerging nations like Afghanistan, Ireland, and Zimbabwe, the trio remains excluded from the WTC framework for the foreseeable future.

The conference also provided a platform for JioStar, the ICC's official media rights partner, to address the executive body regarding future broadcasting and commercial strategies.

USA and Canada suspensions upheld as Mauritius joins ICC roster

Following the ICC's annual meeting, the governing body decided to uphold the suspensions of both USA Cricket and Cricket Canada. The strict penalties will remain in place until both boards successfully resolve their ongoing internal governance issues. While Cricket Canada is less impacted by the immediate fallout, the continued suspension deals a massive blow to the USA. As the host nation for the upcoming LA28 Olympics, the American board risks jeopardizing its direct qualification path into the historic Olympic cricket tournament if its institutional turmoil persists.

Aside from monitoring the compliance of both North American boards, the ICC is keeping a close eye on the potential integration of a Canadian franchise into Major League Cricket (MLC) before revising its stance. On a more positive note, the meeting concluded with a warm welcome for Mauritius, which was officially inducted as the ICC's newest Associate member. With this addition, the global cricket roster expands to 111 countries, consisting of 12 Full Members and 99 Associate nations.
