Two Sri Lankan clubs now have the ignominy of being involved in what can only be seen as a comical game of cricket after the two sides set the record for the lowest total for a tied match in a T20, or any match, that had lasted more than 10 overs. The two involved teams were Kalutara Town Club (KTC) and Galle Cricket Club (GCC), both of whom are playing in the ongoing Major Clubs T20 tournament.
In a match that was curtailed by rains, the two Sri Lankan sides played out six overs each and went on to finish with identical totals of 30/9. The match also saw only two of the 12 overs go wicketless, with an average of 3.33 also becoming the lowest of any T20 fixture that has lasted beyond 10 overs.
The left-arm spinners were the pick of the bunch, with the spinners picking up 15 of the 18 wickets that were conceded during their innings. There were also four run-outs and two stumpings. which accurately describes the nature of the match.
The best player in the match was KTC's Inshaka Siriwardena. He notched figures of 5/5 — his best ever — and also scalped four in a single over to take him to the top of the tournament's wicket-takers list. Meanwhile, Galle's Kawsitha Kodithuwakku was the only batter from either side to touch double digits, with 12 runs to his name.
However, this result will not do much for either side's chances of making it to the knockout stage of the competition which sees the group leaders from the four groups qualify. Following this result, KTC are one point off the bottom, while GCC are third, three points off the top with just one game to play.
As per the tournament playing conditions, Super Over will be played only from knockout rounds onwards. The game between KTC and GCC was one of 32 matches that had been rescheduled after rain had washed out many games in May.
While it is unusual for domestic games abandoned due to rain to be rescheduled, the tournament is being used primarily as a means to identify players to be included in the draft for the Lanka Premier League in August. Sri Lanka Cricket therefore felt it would make more sense to reschedule the games.
