In 2023, India achieved a remarkable feat in cricket by becoming the top-ranked team across all formats. Their year was highlighted by dominant performances in bilateral series and a victorious campaign in the Asia Cup 2023. Despite this success, they narrowly missed clinching the ODI World Cup, a tournament they hosted. Key contributors to their success were star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who not only had an outstanding year with the bat but also helped establish an attractive style of play. Looking ahead, 2024 is expected to be a pivotal year for the team, especially with the potential final year in T20 cricket for some senior players.

India's cricket team is set to have a busy schedule in 2024, a year that will be crucial in the team's ongoing transition phase. In Test cricket, India has introduced an aggressive batting approach with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer taking up the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, succeeding Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. The ODI format has also seen the infusion of new talent, signaling the start of a journey for a new generation of Indian cricketers.

Among India's key assignments in 2024, the following are the top three:

Test Series Against England: India is scheduled to host England for a five-match Test series in January. This series will be a clash between Rohit Sharma's India and Ben Stokes' England, who have adopted an aggressive approach known as "Bazballing". The only previous encounter between these two sides in England resulted in an English victory. India's Jasprit Bumrah, who captained in that match, will be keen to reverse the outcome on home turf. This series will be a significant test for England, who have excelled in Test cricket in recent times. The series will unfold across five venues - Hyderabad, Vizag, Rajkot, Ranchi, and Dharamsala - from late January to early March.

T20 World Cup 2024: The Indian team's lineup for the T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the Caribbean Islands and the USA in June, remains uncertain. With only three more T20Is scheduled before the tournament, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will play a crucial role in player selection. The captaincy remains a dilemma, as Rohit Sharma has been absent from T20I cricket since the 2022 World Cup semi-final. Hardik Pandya, who took over the captaincy, is currently recovering from an ankle injury. His return is expected during the IPL, giving him a short window to establish his fitness and form before the ICC tournament.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25: The much-anticipated series will see India touring Australia for a five-match Test series. India has a history of success against Australia, having won the series in 2018/19 under Virat Kohli and in 2020/21 under Ajinkya Rahane's leadership. The upcoming series carries high expectations for the Indian team, possibly featuring Rishabh Pant. Rohit Sharma, as captain, will aim to secure a series victory in Australia, enhancing his legacy in Indian cricket.

The year 2024 stands as a significant milestone for Indian cricket, with these major series offering opportunities for strategic excellence and further solidifying India’s position as a dominant force in international cricket.
