India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting August 15, carries crucial stakes for their World Test Championship final aspirations. The tour kicks off at the Galle International Cricket Stadium before shifting to Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club for the final match from August 23 to 27.
India on cusp of playing 600th Test match
The opening Test in Galle marks a significant milestone in cricket history as India becomes first Asian team and third overall to reach 600 Test matches.
With 599 Tests to their name heading into the tour, India joins an exclusive tier previously occupied by only England—who lead all nations with 1,097 matches since 1877—and Australia, who sit second with 882 fixtures.

Since taking their first steps in Test cricket against England back in 1932, India have amassed 186 victories over the decades. They currently rank fifth on the all-time wins list, trailing Australia (426), England (405), South Africa (191), and the West Indies (187).
Head-to-head, India have firmly dictated their red-ball rivalry against Sri Lanka, securing 22 wins and suffering only seven defeats across 46 encounters. Their most recent meeting in early 2022 saw India complete a 2-0 sweep under Rohit Sharma's leadership.
While India remain undefeated on home soil against Sri Lanka—boasting 13 wins and nine draws in 22 home Tests—the record in Sri Lanka is much tighter. In their 24 matches on island soil, India have claimed nine victories compared to Sri Lanka's seven, with eight matches ending without a result.
