India and South Africa will play a six-match ODI series in perfect dress rehearsal for the showpiece tournament

To gear up for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has crafted a highly strategic roadmap. Going by an Indian Express report, Team India will face co-hosts South Africa in an extended six-match One Day International (ODI) series held directly at ODI World Cup 2027 venues, giving the Men in Blue an invaluable head start on local conditions.

India to play 6-match ODI series in South Africa before 2027 World Cup

With the International Cricket Council (ICC) releasing the 2027 ODI World Cup itinerary a full year ahead of its October 2 start date, India’s path to glory is already taking shape. Shubman Gill's brigade will kick off their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 7 during the group stage, making early preparation on South African soil even more crucial.

Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, Team India will use the six-match series to adapt to the unique pitch behaviors, bounce, and atmospheric conditions across premier grounds like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Centurion. Given that South Africa hosts 8 of the tournament’s 12 total venues, this prolonged exposure gives the coaching staff and selectors a prime opportunity to lock in tactics and settle on the ideal squad combination well before matchday one.

As Team India targets ultimate glory at the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, their preparation features a comprehensive, multi-series roadmap. Designed to test squad depth and establish tactical clarity, India's schedule consists of six key bilateral ODI series alongside the 2027 Asia Cup, providing a balanced mix of home conditions and vital away exposure.

How have India fared in ODI series in South Africa?

When competing on South African soil, Team India has accumulated a total of 39 ODI appearances over the years. Out of these encounters, the Men in Blue have secured victory in 13 matches while falling short on 23 occasions. The remaining three games concluded without a definitive result.

How did India perform in 2003 World Cup in South Africa?

During the 2003 ICC Men's ODI World Cup, jointly hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, the Indian team mounted an impressive campaign that culminated in a remarkable finish as tournament runners-up.

Aside from an early loss against Australia during group play, India showcased commanding dominance throughout the preliminary and Super Six phases. The squad rallied with convincing victories over high-profile opponents such as Pakistan and England, alongside a decisive win against Namibia, building unstoppable momentum as they advanced deep into the tournament. In the semi-final round, India locked horns with surprise contenders Kenya. Delivering a clinical performance, the Indian lineup secured a 91-run victory to punch their ticket to the championship match, marking only the second time in the nation's cricket history that they reached an ODI World Cup final. The title clash took place on March 23, 2003, at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, where India faced off against a formidable Australian side. After Australia posted a monumental total of 359/2 in their 50 overs, India put up a spirited effort but was ultimately dismissed for 234, concluding their memorable campaign as runners-up.

India's ODI World Cup Roadmap

West Indies in India (Ongoing Series):

India's bilateral cycle leading into the marquee event kicked off at home against the West Indies in a three-match ODI series. India have already sealed the series 2-0 riding on an emphatic eight-wicket win in the second ODI. The third and final ODI will be played on October 3 in New Chandigarh.

India Tour of New Zealand:

Transitioning to challenging conditions abroad, India will travel to New Zealand for a full five-match ODI series, testing their batting core against seam and swing.

Sri Lanka in India:

Returning home, India will host Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series. This series serves as a crucial platform to refine middle-order combinations and manage player workloads.

Zimbabwe in India:

India will host Zimbabwe in another three-match ODI series, offering fringe players and emerging talent an opportunity to stake their claim for World Cup selection.

The SA Pre-World Cup Tour:
To cap off their preparations, India will tour co-hosts South Africa for a crucial six-match ODI series. Scheduled across primary World Cup venues, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Centurion, this extended tour gives the squad direct acclimatization to local pitch conditions, bounce, and atmospheric factors right before the tournament begins.

India will participate in 2027 Asia Cup, which will be hosted in the 50-over format in Bangladesh. This tournament adds high-stakes tournament pressure to India's run-up, ensuring the squad is thoroughly battle-tested before stepping onto the World Cup stage.

India's 2027 World Cup schedule:

India kicks off its tournament journey on October 7, taking on Australia in Cape Town before facing off against Pakistan in Johannesburg just two days later. The Indian side finds itself in Group A, a six-team pool that also includes Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and a side from the initial qualifying round. The main tournament officially starts on October 2 in Namibia with a short preliminary round, where the three lowest-ranked teams battle it out to grab the final spot in the main group stage.

The main event features 12 teams split evenly into two pools of six. While India competes in Group A, Group B brings together New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh, and the second qualifying team. Once group play finishes, the competition moves into a Super Sevens stage to decide who makes the semi-finals. Under a pre-set seeding rule, India is designated as the A1 team throughout the stage—and if another side manages to eliminate India, that team simply takes over the A1 spot.

This unique system makes a second high-stakes clash between India and Pakistan almost guaranteed. Provided both teams advance out of their initial group, fans can look forward to a rematch scheduled for November 7 in Johannesburg.
