Team India's disappointing Test season has led to several discussions over what needs to be done to improve their performances. After the 1-3 series defeat on Australia tour, one of the suggestions in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) review meeting was performance-based variable pay for players.
As per a report by The Indian Express, the suggestion was made to hold players "accountable" if they fail to live up to the expectations. Like corporates, players will have a variable pay. They will pay a face-cut if their performance is not considered satisfactory.
“It was one of the suggestions given that players should be held accountable and if their performance is deemed not fit as per expectations, they should face variable pay-cuts,” a source told the English daily.
The report comes amidst ICC's push to give more importance to Test cricket. Last year, the BCCI took a major decision to encourage players to play red-ball cricket in the age of fast-paced T20 cricket. Players who feature in the playing XI for more than 50 per cent of Tests in a season starting from 2022-24 will get Rs 30 lakh more per game. The number goes up to Rs 45 lakh if a player features in 75 per cent of Tests in a season.
However, the performance-based variable pay was only discussed and there is no confirmation over whether it will be implemented or not. During the meeting, the lack of intent was also discussed as several players have focused on playing white-ball formats.
India miss WTC final spot
Team India for the first time failed to make it to the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Under Virat Kohli's captaincy, India qualified for the final but lost to New Zealand and Australia respectively. This time defending champions Australia will take on South Africa in the WTC final.
India's next Test series, focus on white-ball cricket for few months
The next WTC cycle is a few months away for the two-time finalists. India's next Test series is a five-Test series on England soil starting in June 2025. Before that, the focus shifts to white-ball cricket. India will play England at home in a five-T20I series followed by a three-ODI series. Then India will play in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 which will be followed by the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
