Cricbuzz stated that it “understands” the player auction will take place on home soil. The previous three auctions were held outside India: in Dubai in 2024, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia in 2025, and Abu Dhabi in 2026. The move abroad had been driven by logistical challenges.
BCCI officials previously cited difficulties in securing suitable venues and sufficient hotel rooms in major Indian cities during the peak wedding and festival season, which typically coincides with the auction window in November or December. Bringing the event back to India could ease travel for franchise owners, team officials and domestic stakeholders while restoring a familiar setting for one of cricket’s most high-profile annual events.
Specific details on the exact date, city and whether it will be a mini or mega auction have not yet been confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The development comes as franchises begin preparations for the 2027 season, with player retentions and the auction expected later this year.
