Imad Wasim recently announced his retirement from international cricket.

Imad wasn't included in Pakistan's squad for the just-concluded ODI World Cup.

Former Pakistani star all-rounder Imad Wasim has attributed his decision to retire from international cricket to mental health concerns. The 34-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder announced his retirement earlier this week. Wasim had fallen out of favor in Pakistan's ODI and T20I squads, with his last international appearance coming in a T20I against New Zealand in Rawalpindi in April 2023. Reports also suggested a rift between Wasim and former Pakistan captain Babar Azam. Despite initial reports suggesting a potential recall to the ODI team for the World Cup following Pakistan's struggles with spinners in the Asia Cup, Wasim was ultimately overlooked by the selectors, prompting his decision to retire from international cricket.

In a candid interview, Imad Wasim disclosed that his mental well-being was a significant factor in his abrupt retirement from international cricket. When questioned about the possibility of reversing his decision, Wasim hinted at a potential reconsideration in the future.

“It was my own decision (to retire). Mentally, I wasn’t in the right state of mind where I should have been. If I were in that mental state, it’s obvious I would never have done such a thing. So, it’s a matter of mindset, and understanding. It’s more about the mental aspect than anything else,” said Imad Wasim.

“This is life, and anything is possible in it. Nothing is impossible. However, I hadn’t decided for a U-turn. You never know what life might bring next,” he further added.

Part of Pakistan’s 2006 U19 World Cup-winning team, Imad Wasim made his debut for the senior team in 2015. He was a key member of the Pakistan team that won the Champions Trophy in 2017. Wasim is a left-arm slow orthodox bowler and a left-handed batsman. He has played 55 ODIs and picked up 44 wickets in addition to scoring 986 runs. In 66 T20Is, he has picked up 65 wickets and scored 486 runs. He is known for his ability to bowl economical spells and his big-hitting ability in the lower order. He is a versatile player who can also contribute with his fielding.

Wasim will be seen featuring for Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League 2023-24.
