For cricket lovers and followers of Bollywood this week is going to be a week to remember forever as the movie ‘83’ is scheduled to release on December 24. The movie that is going to depict India’s first World Cup win in 1983 is directed by Kabir Khan and has Ranveer Singh playing the role of the World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev.
“It was indeed the biggest responsibility of my life as they are all legends and what they achieved in 1983 is one of the most glorious chapters of our history. And everything changed forever since that victory,” said Ranveer Singh in a special program with India Today in Mumbai as the actors and former cricketers gathered for the premier show.
The World Cup winning catch- Vivian Richards’ wicket- that was taken by skipper Kapil off Madan Lal’s bowling, is still considered as one of the decisive moments that helped Indian team in scripting a memorable victory against West Indies.
While talking about that moment, former cricketer and member of the World Cup winning squad Sunil Gavaskar stated that the catch taken by captain Kapil is an ideal catch and should be written in coaching books.
“At that point it seemed like the way Viv Richards was batting he would finish the match in an hour. The level of confidence Madan showed, the conversation he had with skipper Kapil and eventually Kapil’s decision to give Madan another over, everything was amazing.
“Most importantly the catch that Kapil took was an example of an ideal catch which should be written in the coaching books and that catch changed the outcome of the match,” explained Gavaskar.
Actor Tahir Raj Bhasin will be seen in the movie playing the role of great Gavaskar. Sharing an interesting tale, Tahir pointed out that people were a little doubtful whether he would be able to enact the iconic style of Gavaskar’s walking.
“There is a small anecdote here. When I signed for this movie, everyone from all over the world was saying that I would be able to copy him but what will happen to his iconic walk? People from the younger generation call it swag.
For six months I just watched his videos on YouTube and that too on slow motion,” recalled Tahir.
But not only the commoners; Tahir now has received appreciation from Gavaskar as well.
“I think Tahir played my role brilliantly, he copied my style of walking in a perfect manner and viewers will get to see my batting action in the movie,” expressed Gavaskar.
