Former England batter Jonathan Trott has taken up a short-term coaching role with Ireland just days after emerging as a contender for England's vacant Test head coach position following Brendon McCullum's surprise sacking. The former England star will work with the Irish men's team ahead of their crucial ODI series against Afghanistan as speculation over his coaching future continues.
Trott's appointment comes at a time when several high-profile names are being linked with England's red-ball coaching vacancy, with reports suggesting he features on the ECB's shortlist.
Jonathan Trott to assist Ireland ahead of Afghanistan ODI series
Ireland Cricket confirmed that Trott has joined the men's setup in a 14-day consultancy role, during which he will assist the team through the opening two matches of the five-match ODI series against Afghanistan beginning on August 5.
Ireland Performance Director Graeme West highlighted the importance of Trott's appointment, describing the series as a key step in the team's preparations for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2027.
"The upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan is critical to Ireland Men's squad's preparations for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier in early 2027," West said.
Having previously coached Afghanistan, Jonathan Trott is expected to provide valuable tactical insight into the opposition while also helping Ireland's players and coaching staff strengthen their understanding of 50-over cricket.
Trott's appointment comes amid England coaching speculation
Trott's move to Ireland has come amid growing speculation surrounding England's search for a new Test head coach after McCullum's departure from the role. While the former New Zealand captain will continue overseeing England's white-ball teams, the ECB is now looking for a successor to lead the Test side.
According to reports, Trott's name is among a shortlist of candidates being considered, with former England coach Andy Flower also emerging as one of the frontrunners.

Beyond preparing Ireland for Afghanistan, Jonathan Trott is also expected to share his leadership philosophy with the newly revamped coaching group led by head coach Gary Wilson, who recently replaced Heinrich Malan. Ireland head into the Afghanistan series with confidence after registering their historic first-ever T20I series victory over India, and the addition of Trott is expected to further strengthen the team's preparations ahead of next year's World Cup qualifying campaign.
