T20 cricket is called a batter’s game. In the fast-paced format, cricket fans flock to the stadiums to watch a flurry of fours and sixes. But Philippines women’s team decided to score at a rate which is not even acceptable in red-ball cricket with the advent of Bazball approach. Philippines managed to score just 21 runs in a T20 match despite playing the full 20 overs.
They broke Mali's record which was created in June 2019. Mali managed to score 30 runs for the loss of nine wickets against Rwanda in a failed run chase and ended up losing the match by a big margin of 216 runs.
In the SEA Games Women's Twenty 20 Cricket Competition on May 6, Malaysia skipper Winifred Duraisingam won the toss and opted to field first. The decision paid dividents straight away. Without scoring a single run, Philippines lost both their openers for respective two-ball ducks. Ainna Hamizah Hashim drew first blood with the wickets of Jhon Andreano whereas April Saquilon got run out.
In the next over, Hashim got the wicket of Hennifer Alumbro. Not a single boundary was scored in the powerplay overs as Alex Smith and Jona Eguide were more focused on not losing their wicket. Skipper Durainsingam introduced herself into the attack and got the wicket of Eguid who scored just one run from 15 balls. Smith and Catherine Bagaoisan could not hit a single boundary in the middle overs as well. Smith scored at a baffling strike rate of 6.45. She scored just two runs from 31 balls. Mahirah Izzati Ismail broke the partnership in the 12th over.
In her next over, Ismail got the wicket of Philippines skipper Josie Arimas. While Bagaoisan held on to one end, Danusri Muhunan got the wicket of Simran Sirah for an eight-ball duck. The wicketkeeper-batter's resistance came to an end in the 18th over. Dhanusri got her wicket. She scored seven runs from 36 balls. The last wicket of the innings fell on the last ball. No.10 batter Ma Mandia got bowled by Dhanusri. She scored three runs from 12 balls. Philippines managed to post just 21 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets as they created a T20 record.
It was an easy run chase for Malaysia openers as they won the game in just 15 balls. Philippines erred with the ball too and gave seven runs in extras.
