The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has streamlined its white-ball leadership by handing veteran wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das the reins of the ODI team through the 2027 World Cup. Replacing all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Litton now holds dual captaincy across both limited-overs formats, a strategic move by the BCB to align team philosophies, simplify squad management, and establish tactical continuity. Towhid Hridoy will continue as his vice-captain in the 50-over setup, while Nazmul Hossain Shanto retains the Test leadership, effectively ending the board's short-lived three-captain experiment.

Litton Das replaces Mehidy Hasan Miraz as Bangladesh's ODI captain
Despite making logical sense for long-term planning, the leadership change came as a genuine surprise given Bangladesh’s recent momentum, including impressive back-to-back home ODI series victories over Pakistan and Australia. Nevertheless, the long-term mandate offers Litton a career-defining platform to lead his nation at a pinnacle ICC event. While his previous stint as ODI skipper yielded a modest record of three wins and three losses across seven matches (a 42.85 per cent win rate), his steady leadership in T20Is gives the board confidence that he can elevate the 50-over team to similar heights.
Litton Das' captaincy profile
Litton Das’s first taste of ODI leadership came in late 2022 following an injury to regular skipper Tamim Iqbal, a brief stint highlighted by a historic 2–1 home series triumph over India. Though he stepped down shortly after that iconic victory—which saw Bangladesh pull off thrilling back-to-back wins by 1 wicket and 5 runs, his captaincy numbers were encouraging. Across six innings at the helm, Litton accumulated 149 runs at a solid average of 29.80 with a top score of 53, and he will now aim to lead from the front with the bat as he takes on the role full-time.
His appointment brings an end to Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s tenure, which began in 2025 when he replaced Najmul Hossain Shanto despite the latter’s strong record. Between 2024 and July 2026, Miraz oversaw 24 ODIs, finishing with a 43.75 per cent win rate (10 wins, 13 losses, and a tie). While Miraz turned Bangladesh into a formidable force in home conditions—capped by recent back-to-back series wins—the team struggled heavily on the road under his watch, managing just two victories in 13 away matches.
