MS Dhoni and Deepak Chahar share a special bond off the field. Chahar has been playing under MS Dhoni's captaincy for a long time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). There have been numerous instances in the past where Dhoni and Chahar can be spotted playing pranks on each other.
During the audio launch of Dhoni Entertainment's 'LGM', the CSK captain spoke about his camaraderie with the right-arm pacer and compared him to a 'drug'. The former India captain also revealed that he is unlikely to see a matured Chahar in this lifetime.
"Deepak Chahar is like a drug, if he is not there, you would think, where is he - if he is around, you would think, why he is here - good part is that he is maturing but he takes time & that is the problem, in my lifetime, I won't see him matured (smiles)," Dhoni said.
Chahar played a key role in Men in Yellow's title-winning IPL campaign in 2023. The right-arm pacer bagged 13 wickets and helped CSK secure a record-tying 5th IPL crown.
Earlier in the year, Chahar revealed an interesting incident when Dhoni scolded and threatened to reprimand him during an IPL match. Chahar feared that his career might be over as a death bowler.
"Sarfaraz (Khan) was batting. Actually I was bowling in the death over for the very first time. They never made me bowl in the death because it was not needed. There were bowlers like Shardul and Bravo to bowl the death overs. Now Bravo got injured. It was a critical match," Chahar said in an pisode of Breakfast with Champions.
"They needed 42 from 3 overs. I bowled a slower and twisted my ankle. And the ball was full toss and went out. I thought it must have got stuck and I should bowl again. I bowled again and it was the same ball. I was thinking I bowled 2 beamers and he (Dhoni) won’t let me bowl. My career as a death over bowler was over.
"He (Dhoni came to me and said ‘you act smart as if you know everything. Why are you bowling in this manner?’ I was thinking that my career was over. Then I gave 5 runs off the next 5 balls and after the match he hugged me," the pacer revealed.
