New Zealand's veteran all-rounder Suzie Bates has decided to step away from international cricket after the end of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, which is going to take place in England and Wales from June 12.

The 38-year-old all-rounder represented New Zealand at the highest level for more than 20 years, featuring in over 362 international games across ODIs and T20Is. While announcing her decision of retirement, Bates recalled fond memories in her 20-year long association with the national team.

"When I look back on the past twenty-plus years, I can't quite believe how quickly the time has gone," said Bates.
"I'm immensely proud to have worn the fern so many times, and I've been filled with enormous purpose and joy in striving each day to be a better person, teammate, cricketer, and athlete for this team," added Bates.
She took a moment to express gratitude towards her teammates who backed her throughout her 20-year long international career. Meanwhile, she also confirmed that the upcoming ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 will be her last assignment with New Zealand.
"Words can't truly express my gratitude to all my teammates and coaches along the way, I have one final mission: to head to the UK - a place that holds so many special memories for me - and win another World Cup," concluded Bates.

Suzie Bates announced her arrival in international cricket by making ODI debut against India in 2006 and went on to become leading run-getter for New Zealand in Women's international cricket.
In ODI cricket, Bates played over 181 games amassing over 5,964 runs at an average of 38.2 with a strike rate of 79.5. She smashed 13 centuries and 37 half-centuries in the format. With the ball, Bates picked 83 wickets at an career-economy of 4.99 backed with one four-wicket haul.
IN T20Is, Bates went on to create the same level of impact, scoring over 4717 runs at an average of 28.9 with a strike rate of 108.6. She smashed 28 half-centuries and one century. Meanwhile, she managed to clinch 62 wickets with one four-wicket haul.
