New Zealand star opener Martin Guptil achived a sensational milestone in T20I cricket in a match against Scotland on Wednesday as he became the highest run-scorer in the shortest format of the game.
Guptill smashed 40 run as Scotland took a thumping from New Zealand, who got off to a two-match series with a 68-run victory. With this Guptill surpassed Rohit Sharma's, who has 3,379 runs to achieve this rare feat. The 35-year-old has mustered a total of 3,399 runs in T20Is, 20 runs more than the Indian skipper.
Guptill has played 116 T20I matches while Rohit has played 128. The Indian skipper will next be seen in action in the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies, beginning Friday.
Guptill's average in the shortest format is 32.37 while Rohit's average is 32.18.
Former India skipper Virat Kohli is in the third spot with 3,308 runs to his name in 99 matches at an astounding average of 50.12.
Ireland's Paul Stirling is in the fourth spot on the list with 2,894 runs while Australia captain Aaron Finch is in the fifth spot with 2,855 runs.
In the ongoing match between New Zealand and Scotland, the former batted first and posted 225/5 in 20 overs.
Currently, Guptill tops the list and is closely followed by the Indian duo of Rohit and Kohli. Paul Stirling comes fourth with 2,894 T20I runs while the Australian skipper Aaron Finch is fifth with 2,855 runs.
The 35-year-old Guptill is the only New Zealand player in the top 10 with McCullum currently on 12th after finishing his career with 2140 T20I runs. While Guptill went about breaking the milestone, his opening partner added a milestone of his own in Edinburgh, becoming the fifth New Zealand men’s player to hit a T20I hundred.
Allen completed his maiden T20I hundred off just 54 balls as New Zealand put on a mammoth 225 on board, helped by a late cameo from Jimmy Neesham, who finished on 30 off a mere nine balls.
