The ICC Men's Test Team of the Year 2024 included world No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and star Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, on Friday, January 24. Bumrah played 13 Test matches in 2024 and took 71 wickets, the highest of any bowler. However, he is currently sidelined due to injury concerns. He dismissed 32 batters in nine innings during the five-match Test series against Australia (Border-Gavaskar Trophy).
Along with his bowling prowess, Bumrah was an outstanding captain, leading India to a 295-run victory over Australia in the opening Test of the five-match series at Perth's Optus Stadium. Jaiswal, on the other hand, scored 1478 runs for the Rohit Sharma-led team in 15 games. The left-handed batsman ended as India's top run scorer in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and amassed 712 runs in the five-match Test series against England at home.
In Test matches last year, Jaiswal was the only player to score more runs than England's Joe Root. In addition to former England Test captain Root, who finished as the top run scorer with 1556 runs in 17 games last year, Harry Brook (1100 runs) was selected for the ICC Test Team of the Year 2024. Kane Williamson, the former captain of New Zealand, rose over several of his rivals to take the crucial number three spot. Throughout the year, he scored four hundred and amassed 1013 runs at an average of about 60.
Jamie Smith and Kamindu Mendis, the two most outstanding young players of the year, made up the lower part of the batting order. Smith was the second-highest run-scoring wicketkeeper with 637 runs from nine Test matches at 42.46, while Mendis got five hundreds in his breakthrough season of 1049 runs.
Cummins named captain
Australia defeated India 3-1 in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with captain Pat Cummins having virtually accomplished every sporting goal. At 24.02, he also claimed 37 wickets. The only pacers with higher averages than Cummins were Bumrah, Gus Atkinson, and Matt Henry. The Kiwi entered the three-pronged pace push after defeating Atkinson's 52 at 22.15 with 48 scalps at 18.58.
