Australia have named second-string squads for the ODI and T20I series against England. Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the ODI squad as their senior pace trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc (retired from T20Is) has been rested after the three-Test series against South Africa to manage their workloads.
In the absence of senior pacers, Xavier Bartlett is set to lead the pace attack comprising young sensation Mahli Beardman, Spencer Johnson, Liam Scott and Jack Edwards. Beardman is yet to make his ODI debut. Recently, he took five wickets against India A, including a match-winning four-fer.
Chief selector George Bailey is looking at Beardman as an all-format player as Australia begin preparation for life after the pace trio of Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins.
"Mahli Beardman's recent performances for Australia A were impressive and we are incredibly excited for his return to the national team across the ODI and T20 formats," Bailey said. "We think he can continue to develop into an all-format player across the coming years."
Australia will be without the services of Nathan Ellis for ODIs as he continues to recover from a side strain he sustained during the second ODI of the series against South Africa. Adam Zampa is the lone specialist spinner in the side. Cooper Connolly and Matthew Renshaw can support him with off-spin, along with Travis Head.
The notable omission is Tim David, who seems to be in Australia’s plans for ODI World Cup 2027. He recently turned up for Tasmania against Victoria in Australia's One-Day tournament. The selectors have not taken him for his ODI return after three years.

Two maiden call-ups, JFM & Owen return
Australia will miss several regulars as part of their workload management. In the absence of Head, Inglis, Green and Connolly, the selectors have handed maiden T20I call-ups to Sam Harper and Lachlan Shaw. The wicketkeeping duo seems to be ahead of Josh Philippe in the pecking order.
"Lachie Shaw is a highly talented cricketer we also think will develop quickly and has a powerful game that will impact in the T20 format. Sam Harper has performed strongly in domestic cricket. He is in a great place with his game right now and is executing his style of cricket consistently, across all formats,” Bailey said.
Harper averages just over 24 in 114 T20s and strikes at 138.62. He has a ton and 15 fifties to his name. He had a good run in the previous edition of Big Bash League (BBL) for the Melbourne Stars. Shaw, the 23-year-old wicketkeeper, has played 15 T20s so far. He averages 24 and a half and strikes at 144.11. He is yet to score a fifty or a century in the format.
The five-T20I series will mark the return of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mitchell Owen. Fraser-McGurk has been in fine form in the ongoing One-Day tournament. He smashed a 47-ball 88 against Tasmania and a 63-ball 122 against Queensland. The South Australian is set to play his first T20I since July 2025. Owen has not crossed the fifty-run mark in his last 10 outings across formats, but still received a recall. His previous T20I appearance was against Pakistan in February 2026.
"Jake (Fraser-McGurk) and Mitch (Owen) return to the T20 side, and we believe their ball-striking can be a point of difference in the shorter formats. They are good examples of players who have had an opportunity at the International level and have continued working on their game from what they learnt from those experiences," Bailey said on the hard-hitting duo’s return.
Ellis is expected to recover before the T20I series begins on November 21 at the MCG.
The notable exclusion from the T20I squad is all-rounder Aaron Hardie, who is yet to attain full fitness after suffering a shoulder injury.

Why are several senior players missing from white-ball series vs England?
After a 2-1 defeat in the Test series on the South Africa tour, Australia would not look to take any half-measures before the four-Test series at home against New Zealand. They want their senior pace trio and a few other Test batters to be fit for the Test series, which will play a crucial part in their qualification for the World Test Championship (WTC) road to the final. Australia have slipped to third place with a win percentage of 69.23. After taking on the Kiwis, the Kangaroos will fly to India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2027. It will be followed by MCG’s 150th anniversary Test against England.
“We are in the middle of a highly demanding phase of our schedule,” Bailey said. "Our multi-format players are transitioning directly from the tour of South Africa into an ODI and T20 series, leaving a narrow window to ensure the squad is physically prepared and fresh for the upcoming New Zealand Test series.
"Then, from when the Test players assemble in Perth through to the conclusion of the 150th Anniversary Test against England, the team will have been on the road for more than 100 days. To manage this workload, each player’s build-up to the New Zealand series will be carefully planned and focused on individual's physical and mental preparation.”
