Australia's Matthew Short plays a shot during the second T20I match against Australia at the Gaddafi Cricket Stadium in Lahore on January 31, 2026.

Story Highlights:

Matthew Short played 3 IPL 2026 games for CSK.

Short is not guaranteed a spot in the ODIs.

After a disappointing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Matthew Short has set his sights on revenge against Pakistan in the three-ODI series. Short is almost out of favour with Australian selectors and is set to be replaced by Cooper Connolly for the Bangladesh tour. Short has a point to prove as he was part of the ODI series in 2024 and T20I series earlier this year that Australia lost to Pakistan. He said that Australians faced tough spin conditions in the previous series but he is prepared for any surface that will be provided for the ODI series.

"When we look back at the last T20 series we had here before the World Cup, those wickets were … some pretty tough spinning conditions," Short told reporters on May 26 as quoted by cricket.com.au.

"So not 100 per cent sure what they're going to produce for us here. But if it's anything like that, we are prepared.

"It was a bit of a disappointing three-game series for us before the World Cup there. But if we are to face those conditions again, we're ready for them, and we're certainly preparing for them.

"Pakistan have had it over us the last couple of series, so we're certainly in the hunt for a series win.

"I know there's been a lot of talk around a lot of test cricket coming up for Australia, but we really want to make sure we win these little white ball series here and there."

Inglis to captain, Marsh out injured

Meanwhile, Australia have suffered a huge blow as their stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the series due to a toe injury sustained during IPL 2026. Josh Inglis will lead Australia when they take the field on May 30 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium

With Marsh ruled out, it is yet to be seen whether he will open the innings or play as no.3 batter. So far, he has 392 runs from 15 innings at an average of 24.50, including three half-centuries.

Short's last ODI appearance was against India in the ODI series at home. In Sydney, he registered a 41-ball 30.

Before heading to Pakistan, he had scored just 60 runs from three innings for CSK as Dewald Brevis was injured.
