Australian captain Pat Cummins has joined a growing international humanitarian appeal urging authorities to grant proper medical attention and unhindered family visitation rights to incarcerated Pakistan legend Imran Khan. The 73-year-old former prime minister has been detained since August 2023, with recent reports indicating a severe decline in his physical health and eyesight while in custody.

The cause has drawn significant cross-border backing from cricket royalty, including former Indian captains Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, who have called for an urgent independent medical evaluation. Echoing a campaign spearheaded by Greg Chappell and other former international skippers, Cummins publicly endorsed the movement, emphasizing that the court-mandated health assessments must be respected alongside basic human rights and that Khan should be accorded the full dignity anyone deserves.
"Adding my support here to GC and the other former international captains. I hope the court ordered medical assessment be allowed to run its course, and that family visits continue. I hope Imran Khan is treated with the dignity anyone deserves," Cummins wrote on X.
Expressing grave concern over Imran Khan’s prolonged incarceration, former Australian captain Greg Chappell highlighted the severe toll that total solitary confinement takes on a person's physical and psychological well-being. Appearing on The Grade Cricketer podcast, Chappell expressed disbelief at how anyone could endure three straight years of complete isolation. He noted that despite Imran being one of the most mentally and physically resilient opponents he ever faced on a cricket pitch, such extreme confinement tests the absolute limits of human endurance.

Chappell painted a stark picture of the former Pakistan skipper’s living conditions, revealing that Imran is largely kept in pitch darkness with virtually no access to books or mental stimulation. He warned that such bleak surroundings inevitably trigger a downward spiral, where deteriorating mental health swiftly compromises physical wellness. Recalling a meeting in Pakistan six years prior—when Imran still appeared as a robust, energetic figure—Chappell lamented how drastically his health has reportedly declined, pointing specifically to alarming reports of failing vision in his right eye.

The ongoing controversy spilled onto the field during the opening day of the Lord's Test against England, after Sky Sports broadcast an interview featuring Imran Khan's sons, Kasim and Sulaiman. The siblings used the platform to highlight their father's deteriorating health behind bars, asserting that his physical well-being had suffered a drastic decline throughout his imprisonment.
The broadcast prompted an immediate and firm response from the Pakistan Cricket Board, which lodged a formal protest with the network. Tensions escalated as reports surfaced that PCB officials threatened to keep their players in the dressing room after the lunch break if Sky Sports aired the segment. While the team ultimately took the field to avert a full-scale match boycott, the episode hinted at the severe diplomatic and administrative friction surrounding the issue.
