India's top-order batter Shubman Gill who did not live up to the expectations on Australian pitches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 is set to play for Punjab in their next Ranji Trophy 2024-25 clash.

As per a report by Hindustan Times, Gill will turn up for the clash against Karnataka starting on January 23.

“Yes, Shubman Gill is available for Punjab’s Ranji match against Karnataka on January 23,” a source within Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) told the English Daily.

Gill registered scores of 31, 28, 1, 20 and 13 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Missed Perth Test due to thumb injury, dropped from MCG Test, Gill could not even score 100 runs on Australia tour. He showed promise with an unbeaten half-century in the pink-ball warm-up game against Prime Minister's XI but could not replicate it on the big stage and contributed to recurring batting collapses.

Gill's run in recently concluded season

Gill took the decision amidst calls from senior players and former Indian cricketers to play domestic cricket. Before the home season began with two-Test series against Bangladesh, he also played in one Duleep Trophy match for India A.

In the home leg, he scored an unbeaten century against Bangladesh in Chennai and contributed with a 90-run knock in the Wankhede Test against New Zealand. Many have questioned Gill's place in the Test team as he has been inconsistent in the format. The 25-year-old has scored 1,893 runs from 32 Tests at an average of 35.05 including five centuries and seven fifties.

Gambhir stresses on need to play domestic cricket

After India's defeat in the Border-Gavaskar series, head coach Gautam Gambhir had said that he wants everyone in the team to play domestic cricket whenever they are available.

"I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket. That is how much importance domestic cricket needs to be given. Not only one game. If they are available and they have the commitment to play red ball cricket, everyone should play domestic cricket. As simple as it can get. If you don't give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players that you want," Gambhir said in the post-series press conference in Australia.
