In a recent development to the Prithvi Shaw selfie case, the social media influencer Sapna Gill along with three others, who were accused of attacking the star India batter, have been booked and sent to judicial custody by the Mumbai court on February 20 (Monday). The 14-day judicial custody has been given after their police custody ended on Monday.
Sapna along with others embroiled in manhandling Prithvi and attacking his car after the star India batter denied to give them a selfie, were produced before a magistrate court at the end of their initial police remand on February 20. The police sought an extension of the remand, saying they need to recover the baseball bat and the vehicle used in the alleged crime. However, the court rejected the plea and remanded the accused in judicial custody.
Sapna with eight others were arrested by Oshiwara Police after the incident in Mumbai under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (143, 148, 149, 384, 437, 504, 506). However, Sapna's lawyer Kaashif Ali Khan said in the court that the additional section was added belatedly just to harass the accused.
The incident took place on February 15 following which Shaw's friend Ashish Yadav filed a complaint which stated that the accused followed the car after the selfie denial and threatened false cases if money was not given. The incident took place when Shaw had gone with his friend to a five-star hotel for dinner. The accused came to Shaw and insisted on a selfie. After obliging once, the same group returned and asked for a selfie again. This time Shaw refused and his friend called the manager. The accused were asked to leave the hotel. The incident angered the accused and when Shaw came out of the hotel, some people were standing with baseball bats.
A chase ensued and Shaw's car was vandalised. The lady accused demanded Rs. 50,000 or she would file false charges. A case has been registered under several sections of the IPC.
Meanwhile, Shaw was last seen in action in the Ranji Trophy with Mumbai. He was called up for the T20I series against New Zealand in January. However, the Mumbai star failed to break into the XI in either of the three games. Despite his off late Ranji heroics, he was not named in India's Test squad for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series against Australia.
