South Africa’s 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock has reversed his ODI retirement. De Kock has been named in South Africa’s ODI and T20I squads for Pakistan tour and the only T20I against Namibia.
De Kock’s last international appearance was against India in the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados. He retired from ODIs after the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. His last ODI appearance was against Australia in the semifinal clash at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
"Quinton's return to the white-ball space is a major boost for us. When we spoke last month about his future, it was clear that he still has a strong ambition to represent his country. Everyone knows the quality he brings to the side, and having him back can only benefit the team," head coach Shukri Conrad said.
New captains for South Africa
South African selectors have rested captain Aiden Markram from the limited-format series considering his workload. While David Miller will lead South Africa in the T20I series, young wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Breetzke will lead in the ODIs. Also, for the only T20I against Namibia, Donovan Ferreira has been named captain.
"Matthew has really come into his own in the 50-over space and has led SA A and the Warriors in this format before, and I have no doubt he'll captain the ODI side with that same character and composure which he brings to his game. During the T20I series against England, I was impressed by Donovan's maturity, his understanding of the game, and the way he connects with the younger players in the squad. His appointment as captain for the T20I against Namibia presents an exciting challenge, one that I believe will only enhance his development as a cricketer," Conrad explained.
The only T20I against Namibia will be played on October 11. The three-T20I series against Pakistan will begin on October 28 and go on till November 1. The three-ODI series will be played between November 4 and 8.
