In a series of historic events, Rahmat Shah played a captain's knock to guide Afghanistan to a dominating six-wicket win over Ireland in the fifth and final ODI on Saturday, August 15. While chasing a big target of 299 at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast, Afghanistan completed the challenge in just 48.5 overs, with Rahmat leading from the front. The newly appointed ODI skipper stayed unbeaten on 143 from 133 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and two sixes his match-winning knock.
Rahmat Shah creates history for Afghanistan
Rahmat's match-winning century also earned him a place in Afghanistan's ODI record books. He turned out to be the third skipper from Afghanistan to record a century in 50-over format, joining Asghar Afghan and Hashmatullah Shahidi in exclusive club. His 143 not out also surpassed the previous Afghanistan captain, becoming the highest individual ODI score by a skipper from the nation.
Earlier the record belonged to former Afghanistan ODI captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. He had set the benchmark with a 102-run knock from 131 deliveries against Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium on June 20, 2026.

During his stay at the crease, Rahmat stitched a massive 201-run stand from 210 deliveries for the third wicket with Sediqullah Atal, who missed a well-deserved century after scoring 98 off 112 balls.
Notably, Atal smashed a century in the fourth ODI against Ireland. His impressive stay at the crease ended on 98 when Liam McCarthy removed him on the third delivery of the 41st over. Rahmat then took charge of the chase along with Azmatullah Omarzai, with the pair adding 56 runs to seal the win for Afghanistan.
