Indian cricket star Ravichandran Ashwin has issued an apology after mistakenly posting a condolence message for former Zimbabwean captain, Heath Streak. A misleading tweet on August 23 (Wednesday) by Henry Olonga mistakenly announced Streak's demise, causing shockwaves throughout the cricketing community.
Heath Streak's cricketing legacy stands tall, spanning an illustrious 12 years. From 2000 to 2004, he captained Zimbabwe, showcasing his exceptional leadership skills and unwavering dedication to the sport. His outstanding contributions to cricket are evident from his participation in 65 Test matches and 189 ODIs, where he often represented the spirit and resilience of Zimbabwean cricket.
The false news of Streak's passing led several renowned cricketers, including Sean Williams, Scott Styris, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman, and Virender Sehwag, to express their condolences, echoing the sentiment of countless fans worldwide.
"Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side. RIP @ZimCricketv legend. The greatest all rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end.." said Olonga.
Ashwin, too, was among those who responded to Olonga's tweet with a heartfelt condolence message. However, Olonga quickly rectified his mistake, revealing after a direct conversation with Streak that the Zimbabwean legend was alive and in good health.
Acknowledging his oversight, Ashwin removed his initial post, expressing relief over Streak's well-being and regret for his hasty response.
"I saw Henry Olonga's tweet and mourned it too. It came from a place of utter disbelief and sadness. Deleted that tweet but glad to know that you are doing fine. @HeathStreak3 Take care and apologies for the inaccurate tweet from my side," said Ashwin.
The incident drew a response from Streak himself, who expressed his distress over the false news surrounding his health and urged for more responsibility in such matters. The cricketing world awaits an apology from the initial source of the misinformation, as Streak remains an invaluable figure in the sport's annals.
