Former English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will likely not be a part of the England coaching staff for the white-ball series against Australia. This could be the result of some internal issues in the England dressing room. As per a report from The Telegraph, stand-in head coach Marcus Trescothick will have the option to select his own backroom staff. The report also claimed that Flintoff failed to 'gel with' England white-ball captain Jos Buttler during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. On the contrary, Buttler and Trescothick have a strong relationship because they played together at Somerset. Buttler has also worked with Trescothick to improve his batting techniques over the past few years.
Flintoff was a member of the England backroom staff during their tour to West Indies in 2023 and was also their assistant coach in the T20 World Cup, where the team suffered an exit from the semi-final after a loss against India. However, as his time with the England team draws to a close, it is anticipated that he will embark on a new phase of his coaching career.
During this year's The Hundred, Flintoff coached the Northern Superchargers, who won five games and lost two. It was an impressive beginning to Flintoff's coaching career, even though they missed out on making the playoffs by a very small margin.
Marcus Trescothick eager to be England coach
Trescothick have not ruled out the possibility of becoming the England head coach in the future.
“I'm looking forward to the opportunity, for sure. I'm really excited about doing the job. We'll work it out a little bit more from there. It's not something I ever thought about before, until I got this opportunity now. I'm not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I've been very much focussed on the job we're doing here,” he said.
"I'm here for a period of time, then get ready for the white-ball series. It's just trying to have various conversations behind the scenes with coaches and staff and people like that, making sure we get it right," he added.
