In the aftermath of the Border-Gavaskar 2024-25 series defeat, a detailed discussion took place took place on January 11 in the review meeting. The meeting involving captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny, joint secretary Devajit Saikia, and vice president Rajeev Shukla lasted nearly two hours. During the lengthy discussion, the major point was the batting lineup's failure to deliver in home and overseas conditions. 

As Indian batters struggled, the stakeholders at the meeting wanted to know the core reason behind their failure and steps needed for rectification. Also, the message from the board is to inform selectors that players cannot pick and choose bilateral series. 

Senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been asked to put in more efforts on the field. Their future depends on the performances in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. 

Despite the defeat, Rohit is going to retain his captaincy. However, there will be discussions after the Champions Trophy. Also, there is no hurriedness to take a call on Rohit and Kohli's Test future after their diminishing returns in the 2024-25 season. 

"As of now, nothing is going to happen. However, the management is making up their mind on the captaincy going forward. After Champions Trophy if things don't change, you might see some steps regarding captaincy. As far as Virat is concerned, he also needs to show some runs.. but I don't see both going off from Test," a source close to the developments told Sports Tak.

Rohit and Kohli's Test numbers in Australia

Rohit scored 31 runs from five innings in Australia before he stood down and skipped the fifth and final Test of the series at Sydney Cricket Ground. On the other hand, Kohli excelled in the Perth Test with a century in second innings under Jasprit Bumrah's captaincy. Kohli managed to score 190 runs from nine innings on the tour as he struggled with issues outside off stump.

Rohit and Kohli's recent ODI knocks

On Sri Lanka tour, Rohit scored 157 runs including two half-centuries. Meanwhile, Kohli struggled against spin and scored 58 runs from three innings. This is the only ODI series they have featured in since the ODI World Cup 2023.
