Sachin Tendulkar ‘deepfake’ Video Issue: India's batting great Sachin Tendulkar came down heavily on a ‘deepfake’ video doing rounds on social media featuring him and his daughter Sara Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar came to the fore to address the serious issue of technology misuse concerning a misleading video involving himself and his daughter. Sachin Tendulkar's ‘deepfake’ video, circulated on various social media platforms, used a voice-over on Tendulkar’s image, falsely claiming his daughter's involvement in a money-making game. Tendulkar promptly responded to this deception by issuing a statement on his social media, highlighting the rampant misuse of technology in creating ‘deepfake’ and spreading misinformation.
Tendulkar, in his response, emphasized the urgent need to curb the spread of such false information and ‘Deep Fake’. He urged people to be vigilant and cautious, highlighting the importance of being aware of and combating such digital manipulations. He also reached out to key authorities, including the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar, and Maharashtra Cyber Crime, to address this pressing issue.
"These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology. Request everyone to report videos, ads & apps like these in large numbers. Social Media platforms need to be alert and responsive to complaints. Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and deepfake," Sachin wrote on X.
Deepfakes, a combination of the terms 'deep learning' and 'fake,' utilize advanced artificial intelligence to produce hyper-realistic videos or audio clips. These manipulated media pieces can falsely depict individuals engaging in actions or speech they never actually performed, leading to significant ethical and societal issues. The potential for harm with deepfakes is extensive, ranging from personal defamation to the spread of widespread misinformation that could disrupt political processes, incite violence, or even cause international disputes.
The challenge in dealing with deepfakes lies in their rapidly evolving nature and ease of access, making detection and regulation increasingly difficult. As these artificial creations blur the lines between reality and fiction, they pose a significant threat to the integrity of information, individual reputations, and the foundations of democratic institutions globally.
Tendulkar’s stance brings to light the critical need for a concerted effort to tackle the issue of deepfakes. This situation calls for a collaborative approach involving government bodies, technological experts, and the public. The aim is to develop effective strategies to detect, regulate, and mitigate the potential harms posed by these digital falsifications. His call to action serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility in safeguarding digital ethics and integrity in an age where the distinction between real and artificial is increasingly blurred.
