Shai Hope becomes 2nd fastest West Indies batter to 6,000 ODI runs with 69-ball 109, breaks Brian Lara's record as captain

West Indies ODI captain Shai Hope scripted history at McLean Park, Napier as he reached 6,000 runs in the ODI format. Hope smashed an unbeaten 69-ball 109 to break Brian Lara's long-standing record for most centuries as West Indies' ODI captain. This was Hope's sixth ODI century as skipper, surpassing Lara's five.

Other captains who have six ODI centuries as captain are Australia's Aaron Finch and India's MS Dhoni. The top spot belongs to Australia's Ricky Ponting. Batters with ODI centuries in double digits as captains are -- India's Virat Kohli (21), South Africa's AB de Villiers (13), India's Sourav Ganguly (11) and Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya (10).

Hope only second to Viv Richards on this list

Hope reached 6,000 ODI runs in 142 innings, one more than Viv Richards. Overall, he shares the spot with South Africa's Quinton de Kock. He surpassed the likes of Ganguly and De Villiers who achieved the feat in 147 ODI innings.

Hope becomes 5th fastest to 19 ODI centuries

This was Hope's 19th ODI century. He is the fifth-fastest to achieve the feat in terms of innings. The top spot belongs to Pakistan's Babar Azam (102) followed by South Africa's Hashim Amla (104), Kohli (124) and Australia's David Warner (139).

A modern-day ODI great for West Indies

He has become the first batter to score an international hundred against all the full-member sides (Test-playing nations).

While West Indies have not had much success of late across format, Hope is in a league of his own in ODIs. He has 11 ODI centuries from 75 innings this decade. The next on the list is Babar with nine centuries followed by De Kock, Kohli, Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz and India ODI captain Shubman Gill who have eight centuries each.

Hope lifts West Indies in truncated encounter

Due to wet outfield, the game was delayed. It led to a 34 overs per side encounter. The top-order fumbled after Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first. West Indies lost half the side for 86 but Hope kept firing from one end. The skipper reached his fifty from 42 balls. In the final over of the innings, he reached his ton with a six off Kyle Jamieson. His knock helped West Indies post 247/9 on the board. His knock of 109 off 69 deliveries, featured 13 fours and four sixes.
