Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan scripted history at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua, on August 24. Shakib became the first all-rounder in the world to complete a double of 500 wickets and 7,000 runs in the T20 format (T20Is, franchise T20 cricket and domestic T20s). Shakib is also the first left-arm spinner in the world to take 500 T20 wickets. 

Currently, Shakib is the fifth in the list of leading T20I wicket-takers. The first spot is occupied by Afghanistan's Rashid Khan (660 wickets) followed by former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (631 wickets), Sunil Narine (590 wickets), South Africa leg-spinner and Imran Tahir (554) wickets.

The only all-rounder close to the feat of 500 wickets and 7,000-plus runs is Ander Russell. He has 487 wickets and 9,361 runs to his name in the format.

Shakib’s record-breaking spell

For Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, Shakib took three wickets for 11 runs in just two overs against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. His three scalps were Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, Kyle Mayers and Navina Bidaisee. He helped the Falcons restrict Patriots for 133/9. 

Now, he has 502 wickets from 457 games at an average of 21.43, including five five-wicket hauls and 12 four-fers. His economy rate is 6.78 runs per over.

Shakib contributes with bat too

In the run chase, Shakib walked out to bat at no.4. He contributed with 25 runs from 18 balls, including a four and two sixes. He lost his wicket to Bidaisee in the 15th over. Falcons registered a seven-wicket win with two balls to spare as Karim Gore played the anchor role with his unbeaten 47-ball 52.

Shakib’s reaction to historic feat

Shakib was named 'Player of the match' for his all-round performance. 

“It feels great when you contribute for your team, especially when the team is winning, it gives you confidence. Important stage of the tournament coming up, hopefully we can keep the momentum going.” the 38-year-old said in the post-match presentation. 

 

 

The former Bangladesh captain had a piece of advice for youngsters as well.

“Cricket is changing everyday, it’s lot faster than what it used to be ten years back, so they need to keep improving their skills and mindset. That’s normally my role in the team, happy to contribute today, hopefully few more to come,” he added. 

 

 

Antigua and Barbuda Falcons climbed to the top of the points table with their third win from six games. Their next clash is against Trinbago Knight Riders on August 27.
