Iyer creates historic record with SMAT victory.

Shreyas Iyer added another massive to his cap on Sunday, December 15, when Mumbai won the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) under his leadership, just months after he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) championship. At M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Mumbai defeated Madhya Pradesh by five wickets with 13 balls remaining in an exciting summit match. Suryanash Shedge (36 in 15), Ajinkya Rahane (37 of 30), and Suryakumar Yadav (48 in 35) propelled the Indian domestic cricket powerhouses to their second championship, defeating Rajat Patidar's incredible 80 in just 41 balls.

Iyer's historic record

Shreyas Iyer made history by becoming the first skipper in history to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is amazing that Shreyas accomplished the feat in the same year.

With 345 runs at an average of 49.28 in nine games and one century to his name, Shreyas finished as the tournament's fourth-highest scorer.

After winning the title, the 30-year-old became the first captain in IPL history to be let go during the season. At Rs. 26.75 crore, Shreyas was acquired by Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 2025 IPL Mega Auction, making him the second most expensive player in the history of the lucrative competition. Shreyas is expected to be chosen captain of the 2014 runners-up, while a formal announcement is still pending.

Shreyas will become the first Indian to hold the position of captain for three different IPL franchises on a permanent basis. Having led the Delhi Capitals (DC) to their first-ever summit match in 2020, he is still the only player in history to have led two different teams to an IPL final.
