India captain Shubman Gill on August 23 completed 3,000 runs in Test cricket. Gill became the fourth-youngest Indian to reach the milestone. The skipper was aged 26 years and 349 days when he achieved the feat. 

The youngest Indian to score 3,000 Test runs is Sachin Tendulkar (23 years and 228 days), followed by Virender Sehwag (26 years and 157 days), Dilip Vengsarkar (26 years and 263 days).

Gill surpassed Kapil Dev who cross the 3,000 Test runs aged 26 years and 356 days. Gill achieved the milestone in his 77th Test innings. Before the second Test, he needed seven runs to get to 3,000 Test runs.

Gill opts to bat 

Earlier in the day’s play, Gill won the toss and opted to bat first at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. He walked out to bat in the 18th over after Asitha Fernando dismissed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. India were 66/2 after 17 overs.

Gill took 13 deliveries to get off the mark. He hit Prabath Jayasuriya for a boundary off the 13th delivery. At lunch break, India were 88/2 with Gill batting on 11 off 29 balls.

Gill departs after fifty

In the 50th over, Gill reached his century from 99 balls off Sonal Dinusha's bowling. In the 52nd over, Fernando got the wicket of Gill. The skipper played a loose shot and edged one to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella. He scored 50 runs from 108 balls. This is Gill's ninth fifty in the format.

Gill and Devdutt Padikkal shared a 120-run partnership for the third wicket from 34.5 overs. Padikkal completed his half-century during the partnership as well. When Gill departed, India were 186/3 in 51.5 overs. 

Gill makes one change

Earlier, Gill made one change to the side that won in Galle. With left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav unavailable for selection due to viral illness, 33-year-old Saransh Jain made his Test debut. Ravindra Jadeja handed the debut Test cap to Jain.
