SL vs BAN: Tanvir Islam's record-breaking fifer leads Bangladesh to 16-run win, level series 1-1

Bangladesh's left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam scripted history at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo as he claimed a five-wicket haul and helped the tourists beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the second ODI of the three-ODI series. On July 5, Kusal Mendis' 31-ball 56 and Janith Liyanage's 85-ball 78 went in vain as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 232 in the run chase of 249. 

Tanvir's 5 for 39 is the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Sri Lanka in ODIs. the only other Bangladesh bowler to take a fifer is Abdur Razzak. He took five wickets for 62 runs against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2013. Tanvir also registered the second-best bowling figures by a visiting spinner against Sri Lanka.

Emon, Hridoy score fifties

Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz won the toss and opted to bat first. Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto departed early. Parvex Hossain Emon (69-ball 67) and Towhid Hridoy (69-ball 51) scored half-centuries. In the middle overs, Bangladesh struggled. Miraz departed for a single-digit score whereas Shami Hossain and Jaker Ali could not convert good starts. Tanzim Hasan Sakib's unbeaten 21-ball 33 helped Bangladesh get close to 250. Wanindu Hasaranga mopped up the tail as Bangladesh were bowled out for 248 in 45.5 overs. Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets for 35 runs from nine overs.

Tanvir ends Kusal's fiery knock

Sakib struck early with the new ball and dismissed Pathum Nissanka lbw for a single-digit score. Kusal used the fielding restrictions and reached his fifty from just 20 balls. In his second over, Tanvir was hit for two fours and a six. In his next over, Tanvir got rid of Nishan Madushka. Then, he trapped Kusal in front of the stumps in the 12th over. He hit nine fours and a si in 31-ball 56. Skipper Charith Asalanka could not contribute to the run chase and lost his wicket for six runs to Shamim.

Liyanage leads run chase but Sri Lanka fall short

Tanvir was brought back into the attack and he delivered with Kamindu Mendis' wicket. He scored 33 runs from 51 balls. He dismissed Dunith Wellalage as well. Liyanage took charge of the run chase while the required run rate climbed up. Hasaranga could not stitch a partnership and fell to Miraz. Tanvir completed his fifer in his 10th over. Maheesh Theekshana became his fifth victim of the evening. Liyanage reached his fifty from 75 balls. He tried to accelerate in the slog overs. Mustafizur put the final nail in the coffin with Liyanage's wicket. He scored 78 runs from 85 balls, including seven fours and a couple of sixes. On the fifth ball of the penultimate over, Sakib ended the match with Dushmantha Chameera's wicket.

For the third and final ODI of the series, the teams will travel to Pallekele. The series decider will be played on July 8.
