The first ODI between Ireland and Bangladesh ended up being washed out but proved to be a blessing in disguise for South Africa as they earned an automatic qualification spot for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023.
A total of eight berths were available for the direct qualification for the marquee event which will be hosted by India later this year. Notalbly, the qualifications were to be decided on the basis of World Cup Super League standings. And with the quashed Ireland versus Bangladesh's first ODI in Chelmsford on Tuesday night, South Africa managed to pip Ireland for the eighth spot. Ireland required a 3-0 triumph in their three-match ODI series against Bangladesh to get a direct entry to the World Cup, ahead of South Africa.
The 2-1 victory over England and 2-0 win against Netherlands at home this year and a stalemate against Caribbeans (1-1) boosted South Africa's World Cup's qualification cause. Moreover, Sri Lanka's 0-2 rout at the hands of New Zealand also paved the path for Temba Bavuma's brigade in making the cut for the showpiece event.
As far as Team India is concerned, they don't have to worry about World Cup Super League points table already have the privilege of World Cup qualification berth as they are hosting the tournament. India, the 2011 world champions, are stationed third on the table with 139 points in their pocket.
New Zealand topped the super league table with 175 points in 24 matches, while England was placed second with 155 points in 24 games.
Bangladesh will have a chance to surpass India if they manage to win even one of their remaining two matches against Ireland. However, Ireland can still qualify with two more spots yet to be decided when they play in a 10-team qualifying tournament in June-July.
Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand and Pakistan are the other six teams who have earned a direct spot in the 2023 World Cup.
West Indies, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Oman, Nepal, USA and UAE will have to play the Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in June.
