Spain set a new world record for the most consecutive wins in Men's T20Is on Sunday, August 25th. They achieved this feat by defeating Greece by 7 wickets in the ongoing Europe T20 World Cup Sub Regional Qualifier C in Guernsey.
Spain break T20I World Record
Spain's victory over Greece marked their 14th consecutive T20I win, surpassing the previous record of 13 consecutive wins held by Malaysia (2022) and Bermuda. Following Malaysia and Bermuda, India, Afghanistan, and Romania have each recorded 12 consecutive T20I wins. The overall record for the most consecutive wins in T20Is is held by the Thailand women's team, who achieved 17 victories in a row.
Spain's last defeat in T20Is occurred nearly two years ago against Italy. Since then, they have enjoyed an impressive winning streak, claiming victories in series against the Isle of Man, Jersey, and Croatia, as well as continuing their dominance in the current T20 qualifier.
Their winning run was briefly interrupted last year when a match against the Isle of Man was abandoned due to rain. Notably, in that series, Spain had bowled out the Isle of Man for a mere 10 runs before chasing down the target in just two deliveries.
"A proud record to be notified about today, we obviously don't play for records but this does feel special for the group. It has been a transformative few years in Spain, and a lot of credit goes to players who sacrifice a lot of their time to play for Espana, the management and my coaching staff. Couldn't be prouder of all involved," Spanish national cricket team head coach Corey Rutgers told Cricbuzz.
Spain's victory over Greece
Greece batted first and struggled to build a substantial score, finishing their innings at 96 runs for 9 wickets. Sajid Afridi was the top scorer for Greece, contributing 27 runs. The only other Greek batter to reach 20 runs was Mohammad Atif. For the Spanish national cricket team, Yasir Ali was the standout bowler, taking three wickets for 12 runs. Mohammad Atif and Charlie Rumistrzewicz also made significant contributions, each claiming two wickets. In response, the Spanish national cricket team successfully chased down the target of 97 runs in 13 overs, losing three wickets. Hamza Saleem Dar led the way with an unbeaten 32 runs.
