Kavya Maran, CEO of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), has demanded strict measures against players who opt out of the season without valid reasons. The 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) runners-up are among several franchises going through this issue for multiple seasons. Sunrisers Hyderabad have time again invested someone in the auctions and later the player chose to back out without any concrete reason.
Talking about 2024, Ahead of the recent season SRH had invested in Sri Lanka’s star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga roping him for his base price of 1.5 crore. It was considered a steal deal by cricket experts across the globe. However, Hasaranga didn’t turn up during IPL 2024 and the franchise was forced to seek a replacement. Eventually, they faced the void of Hasaranga during IPL 2024 and never had that wicket-taking spinner who could dominate the game in the middle overs and their planning was derailed.
Despite the former Sri Lanka captain citing an injury as the reason for his absence, it is believed that SRH did not react positively to the news. Notably, Hasaranga earned INR 10 crore during his time at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Kavya Maran's big demand
"After being selected in the auction, if a player doesn't come to play the season for any reason apart from injury, he should be banned. The franchises put in a lot of effort into the auction to form their combinations. If a player goes for a low amount in the auction, and subsequently doesn't turn up, it affects the combination and the balance of the side. There have been many instances of overseas players not turning up for this reason," Kavya Maran was quoted by Cricbuzz.
"The franchise should have the discretion of how they split the amount among the retained players. This will prevent situations of conflict where players feel that they are of the same calibre but one player gets a higher amount, while the other lower based on pre-assigned brackets. This will also eliminate the potential of off-contract payments," she added.
Kavya Maran on overseas retention
Kavya also vouched to increase the number of retentions (overseas) within each team. SRH currently has Glenn Philips, Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and VijayKanth Viyaskanth in the squad. It would be a tough choice for SRH considering their rich pool of overseas players.
"Each team is built differently and the core strengths of various squads are different. Some have strong overseas players, some have strong capped Indian players, and some have strong uncapped players. In our case, we have a strong core of overseas players. The number of capped/uncapped/overseas players retained should be at the discretion of the franchise and not restricted. For example, we can retain four overseas and two capped Indians or three overseas and three uncapped Indians and so on," said Kavya.
The IPL franchise owners were involved in a constructive meeting with the BCCI to discuss the parameters for the 2025 auction as well as the fate of the impact player rule on July 31st.
