On May 4, in the SEA Games Women's T20 Cricket Competition, Thailand created history in women's T20I cricket. Nauremol Chaiwai-led Thailand defended a total of 53 against Malaysia to break the 11-year-old record. The previous record belonged to Bangladesh who successfully defended a total of 62 against Sri Lanka in 2012.
After winning the toss, Malaysia Women skipper Winifred Duraisingam opted to field first. Thailand got off to a decent start but Darisingam got the wicket of Nannapat Koncharoenkai with the new ball in the fifth over. In the next over, Thailand lost two quick wickets. Opener Natthakan Chantham got dismissed by Aisya Eleesa whereas Phannita Maya got run out for a three-ball duck. Thailand were 29/3 after powerplay overs.
Duraisingam in her next over got Suleeporn Laomi for a golden duck. Chaiwai and Nattaya Boochatham tried to get the innings back on track. In the 10th over, Mahirah Izzati Ismail struck twice to dismiss Boochatham and Chanida Sutthiruang. In the next over, Rosenan Kanoh got dismissed by Nur Dania Syuhada.
In the 13th over, Chaiwai's resistance came to an end. She lost her wicket to Syuhada after scoring 11 runs from 25 balls. Sornnarin Tippoch and Thipatcha Putthawong tried to play out the overs and continued to face dot deliveries for more than five overs. Ainna Hamizah Hashim broke the partnership in the 18th over. In the penultimate over, Duraisingham removed Tippoch as Thailand got all out for 53 from 18.3 overs.
Chasing a lowly target of 54, opener Wan Julia was the first to fall as she got run out. Boochatham then got the wicket of Mas Elysa for a golden duck. In the next over, skipper Duraisingam got bowled by Sutthiruang for a six-ball duck. In the fourth over, Ismail became Boochatham's second victim. Malaysia found themselves four wickets down for just three runs in the fourth over.
Ainna Hamizah Hashim managed to score just one run from 16 balls before she got run out in the eighth over. Malaysia found themselves 5/9 in eigth over. In the next over Jamahidaya Intan got bowled by Puttawong for a two-ball duck.
Elsa Hunter and Nur Arianna Natsya tried to stabiliser the innings. At one point it looked like they can take Malaysia home. Laomi broke the partnership in the 14th over. Natsya got bowled. She scored nine runs from 23 balls. In the next over, Hunter got stumped by Onnicha Kamchomphu. She scored 19 runs from 32 balls. Putthawong then got rid of tailenders as Malaysia got all out for 41 in 15.3 overs, losing the match by 12 runs.
